Devin Townsend is a unique voice in contemporary progressive music and music in general. With a career spanning 25 years and more than 30 albums worth of original material, Devin has carved himself a niche in the corner of popular music that has seen him headline iconic venues worldwide and lead a style of music that arguably did not exist in its current form without his contributions over the years.

With a staunchly DIY ethos, Devin has produced and engineered albums for many additional bands that have had considerable success themselves within the genre of heavy music, while producing, mixing, and engineering his own albums on his label, HevyDevy Records (HDR). HDR is distributed by Sony and facilitates an unprecedented level of artistic freedom.

Devin continues to contribute to the scene in various other ways as well; he recently released an autobiography through Rockett88 publishing that has sold out the first printing and led him to spoken word, acoustic, and various other creative endeavours. He also initiated The Devin Townsend Creative Academy that includes presentations worldwide and an online curriculum that is currently enjoyed by many students.

Last year, he sold out the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London over a mere four days, to put on an elaborate puppet show about a coffee drinking alien named Ziltoid The Omniscient.

Through experimentations with what the genre of heavy music can ultimately represent, Devin continually raises the bar and outsells many “traditional” artists while maintaining the ability to represent undiluted creative freedom during a time when many artists are scrambling to simply maintain a fan base.

Devin is a hard working anomaly. He loves making music, and with the rather limited interoperation of what heavy music can be by the general public, he simply does what makes him happy, regardless of labels.

Creative BC is proud to support Devin Townsend as part of the BC Music Fund’s Sound Recording Program.
