Reel Green & Actsafe Collaborate to Offer Carbon Literacy Courses

Oct 14, 2017

The Reel Green team caught up with Executive Director of Actsafe, Geoff Teoli, to speak about Actsafe and Reel Green’s new collaboration and the importance of sustainability in film.

Actsafe is a safety association that serves BC's motion picture and performing arts centres by providing safety training, education, and resources for employers and workers. Actsafe conducts workshops and seminars to educate workers on the latest safety information. As part of the collaboration with Reel Green, Actsafe will now be hosting the Carbon Literacy course for members of the motion picture industry!

Teoli commented that this collaboration is a positive step forward towards achieving sustainability within the motion picture industry, "the more people who have this shared experience will have a common understanding and knowledge of sustainability."

The idea for collaboration started in 2017 when Teoli took the Carbon Literacy Course himself. After learning the ins and outs of sustainability, the industry's impacts on the environment, and best practices for sustainable production Teoli felt Actsafe had a duty to help educate and bring awareness to this topic. "We have the resources and the platform to really help communicate sustainable production best practices to both employers and workers of the motion picture industry." Actsafe's comprehensive database and training records also provide additional benefit to members who complete the course as the certificate of completion will be recorded in the member's industry profile. This will help members market themselves to employers as more big studios, producers, and filmmakers move towards a stronger stance on sustainable practices and corporate policy.

In addition to partnering with Reel Green, both Teoli and Actsafe take sustainability very seriously. Actsafe is now incorporating sustainable practices into their work every day. "We started by reducing waste and working with caterers to push for no packaging or to compostable packaging. We also implemented a new in-office recycling program as well as created mindfulness on products we use such as paper." Teoli's team uses Sugar Sheets for their copy paper which is created from a waste product during sugar cane processing. Teoli himself just recently sold his car and now uses transit and other co-commuting methods to reduce his impact on the environment. "I feel like we have a responsibility to maintain the longevity and prosperity of the industry and also have a duty to our future generations and families."

Next Carbon Literact Courses will be hosted at Actsafe's facility free for all members of the industry to attend!
