What is it?
The Sustainable Production Forum (SPF) provides an engaging platform to explore, exchange ideas and drive meaningful change across all levels of the industry. The focus of the 2018 SPF is on "Transforming Culture" as we move into a new era for motion picture, environmental awareness, corporate sustainability, social interests, and technology.
What’s new this year?
Highlights for this year’s SPF include keynote speakers who represent entertainment and sustainability as well as studio executives to speak on what movements are happening at all levels for sustainable production. Featured keynotes include:

Cristina Mittermeier, Photographer, National Geographic; Founder, SeaLegacy
With panelists representing some of the biggest names in motion picture including Warner Bros. Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures. We’re also very excited to welcome producers, filmmakers, crew members and representatives from organizations like the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Storyline Entertainment Inc., and BlueWater Entertainment.
Finally, we’re also very excited to announce the launch of two awards focused on celebrating and recognizing incredible work within sustainable production. The VIFF IMPACT Sustainable Production Excellence Awards are to recognize productions and individuals that demonstrate leadership, excellent performance, and commitment to the integration of sustainable production practices. They serve to celebrate and inspire those who work in motion picture and to challenge the industry to strive
The Award categories are:
Sustainable Production Impact – This category recognizes production(s) that have reduced greenhouse gas emissions and/or diverted waste from landfill and/or contributed positively to the local community.
Sustainable Production Champion – This category recognizes individuals that go above and beyond to advance sustainable production in the motion picture industry.
Awards will be announced on the evening of October 5th!
On October 5th, join expert panelists, actors, producers, and other film and television practitioners to discuss achievements in sustainable production practices; explore how to implement sustainable production in the effervescent world of advertising; and celebrate the launch of a pilot project which continues to pioneer best practices for industry-community relations in BC. The day will end with a reception and Awards Gala in recognition of productions and individuals who have demonstrated leadership on integrating sustainable production practices.
On October 6th, expert panelists, producers, and other film and television practitioners will explore the motion picture industry's role in helping to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals; examine how storytelling and behavior placement can influence change amongst audiences and encourages us to re-examine sustainable production through systems thinking approaches and disruptive innovation. The day will end with a launch for paperless productions and a closing reception.
