Cory Weeds

Mar 2, 2020 | Funding Recipient

Sound recording recipient and saxophonist, Cory Weeds, is approaching the release of his most recent musical collaboration. Cory Weeds Little Big Band's – Explosion! is a  collaborative project with an all-star 11 piece line-up of some of his favourite musicians from Vancouver and New York recorded at Bryan Adams' "Warehouse" studio in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood.

In their video, Weeds and his guests speak to the important collaboration between the visiting artists – Gary Smulyan, Joe Magnarelli, Steve Davis and PJ Perry – and the Vancouver players who host them. Weeds' prolific activity, in particular pairing top tier New York musicians with local Vancouver players, has helped build Vancouver into a vibrant jazz city, with a deep well of skill.

A saxophonist with an expressive sound rooted in Jazz tradition, a label owner tirelessly documenting unsung Jazz heroes, one of Canada’s most important Jazz impresarios, the hardest-working man in Jazz business – Cory Weeds is all of these things, and much more.

Weeds may be best known as the founder and owner of Cory Weeds’ Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, which he successfully ran for more than 13 years. He studied at the University of North Texas and Capilano College and spent many nights on the Cellar bandstand as a leader and sideman. Weeds has also recorded twelve albums as a leader and served as producer on more than 80 recordings. In 2017 Weeds celebrated a win at the 2017 Juno Awards when Metalwood won for Jazz Album Of The Year: Group.
