WarnerMedia’s Thriving Access to Action program expands to Canada
July 20, 2021
Toronto – WarnerMedia Access Canada announced today that the successful WarnerMedia program, Access to Action (ATA), will expand globally with a Summer 2021 launch in Canada. Access to Action Canada (ATA Canada) will launch in British Columbia this July with plans to expand to other regions in the coming months. The program will provide individuals who haven’t traditionally had pathways into the entertainment industry with access to below-the-line job opportunities on WarnerMedia productions across the province. In the U.S., the ATA program has placed over 400 participants on WarnerMedia productions, including Insecure, Lucifer, Watchmen, and In the Heights.
The Canadian program is led by Erika Kumar, ATA Canada Program Manager. There are currently several WarnerMedia productions filming in British Columbia, including Batwoman, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Kung Fu, Riverdale, and Superman & Lois. In collaboration with the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia (DGC BC), this program will focus on placing Production Assistants (PAs) in two departments – the Production Office and the Locations Department.
"We are so incredibly proud to launch Access to Action in Canada, as a uniquely Canadian career pathway that speaks intentionally to the needs and realities of our industry," said Deanna Cadette, WarnerMedia Access Canada Executive Director. "There is incredible talent in this country across all experience levels and an abundance of roles across the industry, particularly as it emerges from the pandemic. This is a truly transformative moment for our industry and an opportunity for pivotal change."
WarnerMedia will work with community partners including local government, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and training programs who will refer and recommend candidates for the program. They will develop hands-on set experience and access the coaching and skills training to navigate and thrive on set. They will also engage in networking opportunities with peers and industry professionals.
Organizations joining ATA Canada to refer candidates to the program include Creative BC, Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society, Collective Bunch Society, and Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF).
"Creative BC and all of our collaborative partners in British Columbia are committed to leading an equitable, diverse, and inclusive industry. Access to Action supports our collective work and we’re proud to be advancing together," said Prem Gill, CEO, Creative BC.
ATA Canada plans to expand to other provinces that are home to WarnerMedia productions to further WarnerMedia Access Canada’s efforts. These efforts include aiding talent in building their dream careers, supporting WarnerMedia in building demographically balanced crews, as well as promoting change in the industry to meet the current and future demands for a highly skilled and versatile workforce in Canada.
