FAQs for Music + Sound Recording Grant Recipients

Relevant to Amplify BC funding

In order to provide flexibility to Amplify BC funding recipients, all Amplify BC projects have now been extended to December 15, 2020. Final reports will still be accepted on an ongoing basis. If your 2020 event is cancelled, you may defer your funding to 2021. Deferred projects will have a new deadline of October 1, 2021.

Creative BC will now fund all Amplify BC projects at 100% up to the grant amount in your funding agreement. No matching funds will be required.

Please contact your Program Analyst to provide updates on your project. All recipients will be notified if there are any changes to deadlines or project requirements as the current situation evolves.

My project is going to be impacted by COVID-19. Who should I notify?

If you are anticipating changes to your timeline or approved expenses for your project, please contact your Program Analyst. The ramifications of COVID-19 on supported projects will be tracked and will help inform future decision making.

I am anticipating delays with my project. Can I receive an extension?

All Amplify BC projects have now been extended to December 15, 2020. If you need an extension beyond this date, please contact your Program Analyst. If your 2020 event is cancelled, you may defer your funding to 2021.

Can I schedule a meeting to discuss my project with Creative BC?

Program Analysts will continue to be available by phone or video conference. In-person meetings are not available at this time.

How will I receive my cheque?

Creative BC is implementing a new process to transfer funds electronically, and will be in touch regarding your grant payments.

Should I anticipate any other changes to my project or grant outside of what’s written in the program guidelines?

We intend to be as flexible as possible to meet the needs of industry, and will update recipients by email with any changes to our programs or policies.

When will programs reopen? When can I reapply? Please sign up for the Music Industry Newsletter for information on new intakes or programs. Showcase BC was launched to support BC artists, and will support previously Amplify BC applicants. No application is necessary. Visit the Showcase BC program page for more information.

Will it reflect poorly on me as an applicant if I am unable to complete my project? If I withdraw my project does it affect my chances at future funding?

No. Projects withdraw for a multitude of reasons. Applicants that withdraw will continue to be in good standing with Creative BC and can continue to access funding for future projects.

What does 100% matching mean?

With 100% matching, you are no longer required to pay for half of the project. Creative BC typically provides 50% matching funding, which means you can apply to a program and be approved for a grant of up to 50% of your project budget. For example, if you were planning to record an album for $10,000, we would have approved you for a grant up to $5,000. If you only spent $8,000 on your recording, you would have received a grant for 50%, which would have totalled $4,000. Now, with 100% matching funding, you can now spend $10,000 on your project instead of $20,000, and receive the full approved grant of $10,000, effectively reimbursing you for all costs.

Live Music + Industry Initiatives FAQs

My event is in the immediate future and will have over 50 attendees, should it be cancelled?

Yes. At the direction of the Minister of Health and B.C.’s provincial health officer, event organizers are required to cancel any gathering larger than 50 people. This includes indoor and outdoor events, conferences, and meetings. More information is available here. Please alert your Program Analyst if your event is being cancelled.

My event is small and will have less than 50 attendees, does it need to be cancelled?

For gatherings under 50 people, refer to Provincial Health Agency of Canada's "Risk-Informed Decision-Making" considerations when deciding whether to postpone or cancel your event here.

My event is being cancelled due to COVID-19, can I still receive funding for expenses that have already been incurred?

Yes. Funding recipients can claim non-recoverable expenses in their final reports for cancelled activities and travel. Please alert your Program Analyst as soon as you have made the decision to cancel your event.

Can I postpone my event?

Yes, we are accepting changes to project timelines. All Amplify BC projects have now been extended to December 15, 2020. If your 2020 event is cancelled, you may defer your funding to 2021. Deferred projects will have a new deadline of October 1, 2021. If your event is cancelled or you wish to postpone, please update your Program Analyst as soon as possible.

My project may need to scale back, or may no longer qualify as expanded activity. Am I still eligible for funding?

Yes, projects that are forced to scale back their activity due to COVID-19 will still be eligible for funding. Expansion is no longer required for the live music presentation stream. Please reach out to your Program Analyst to discuss changes to your project.

My project is going ahead as planned, but I’m worried that revenues from ticket sales, sponsorships, etc., may be less than expected. What happens if I’m not able to find enough matching private funding?

Creative BC will now fund all Amplify BC projects at 100% up to the grant amount in your funding agreement. No matching funds will be required.

My event has been cancelled, but I want to deliver my project as an online performance or switch to a business development project. Can I do this?

Yes. Funding recipients may revision their project as long as it meets the priorities of the funding program. Online performances can replace live events, or propose alternate ways of serving audiences. Live music presentation recipients can propose a business development project to replace their original proposal. Please contact your Program Analyst to discuss changes to your project.
