This early show (the first set) features performances from Doohickey Cubicle, Yawn, and Mauvey, placing a focus on synth-pop/dream-pop genres.
*Please note that the early and late shows for this event feature different artists
Doohickey Cubicle (SYNTH POP): Doohickey Cubicle (formerly Booty EP) are a dream-inducing synth-pop duo that ooze with creativity. Whether it’s their energetic and visually stunning live shows, their self-produced singles or their wealth of DIY music videos, they’re always up to something, and it’s always interesting. Since 2017, Doohickey Cubicle – made up of Alli Deleo on keys/vocals and Francis Hooper on guitar/synth – have been creating art in multiple mediums, and always from the ground up. Beginning as a small project that mostly focused on self-recorded off-the-cuff late-night jams with humorous vocal improvisations, the group didn’t take themselves too seriously (hence the original, or current name). That being said, after a handful of shows, the duo began to realize that the audience felt differently, as they were visibly taken back not only by their ethereal musical presence but by their captivating projection visuals, which have since then become a staple for the band’s live show.
Yawn (DREAM POP): Yawn is a project by artist and musician Julia McDougall. Prior to moving west, Julia lived and worked as a musician in Berlin and produced her self-titled EP alongside Polaris prize nominee Andy Shauf. A long time member of Canada’s folk music scene, Julia aims to extend the intimacy of her work to her audience: her performances are familiar, close, and connected. Yawn’s debut EP listed at number one on CITR radio and was included in the top 100 albums played by CITR in 2019. Yawn was also shortlisted as finalists in CITR’s Shindig competition.
Mauvey: Born in Ghana, West Africa, and raised between the U.K. and Vancouver, Canada, artist and songwriter, Mauvey, filters his unique batch of alternative pop music with hip hop, R&B/soul always alongside his message: Love. “My message will always be Love” says Mauvey, who has designed his projects to distribute Love through the creative narratives of intentional songwriting, intelligent melody, and hypnotic beat.
