Presented in conunction with Canadian Cinema Editors and the Cinematheque
Vancouver editor Julian Clarke and his assistant Gary Lam will speak and take questions following a special screening of 2013's "Elysium" from director Neil Bloemkamp . Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, the film takes us to the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. Damon plays a man who takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. This unique evening will give you a chance to get inside the minds of editors Clarke and Lam and their creative process in crafting this modenr sci-fi classic. The film, which was primarily shot and finished in BC, has a definite Vancouver touch with dozens of other local technicians and artists having contributed their talents as well.
The screening of the film will make up the first half of our evening and will be followed by an in depth discussion of the decisions made in the edit suite that brought the film to life. The discussion will be moderated by editor James Illecic, and will be an excellent opportunity for film buffs, film students and filmmakers to learn about creating tension, suspense and release.
